How I Burned 1000 Calories By Watching TV

The newest fitness craze might seem ridiculous as it doesn’t actually involve any movement. Shape House is what they call an “Urban Sweat Lodge” where you do exactly that, sweat. You lie in a heated bed for an hour and burn up to 1000 calories is the meantime. After seeing pictures of people “sweating” all over instagram, especially by their well-known client Selena Gomez, I decided to try myself.

First thing I noticed when I arrived was the strong smell of incense when I walked in the door. Although it isn’t my favorite, it does set the mood. After checking in and being informed on the procedure and benefits, I was walked to the back where I was given an orange basket. Before getting in my bed, I changed in to their provided pajamas- sweats, a long sleeved shirt, and socks.

I then laid down in the bed and they tucked me in the heated “sleeping bag”. There is a slit by your arm so you can drink the water on the side of the bed, press the call button and work the remote. I then scrolled through their large database of Netflix, amazon video and Hulu until I found something to watch. The beginning was actually quite pleasant because I love heat but then it got increasingly warmer.

When there is 20 minutes left, they put a cold lavender towel on my head and that’s when it got rough. My heart began to race and my face began to drip with sweat. Right as I was beginning to get very claustrophobic they came and untucked me. I was so happy to stretch my limbs and feel the cool air.

After you sweat, they then bring you into their “relaxation room” where they offer you more water, tea and orange slices. They recommend you sit there for 10-15 minutes to cool down and hydrate before leaving. At first, I didn’t know why it was necessary to wear their clothes but after I was thankful I didn’t have to walk out with my clothes dripping of sweat since my once light grey pajamas had became dark grey, almost black.

Overall, it was a great experience. I left feeling lighter, detoxed and energized. I loved it so much I have been back 8 times since my first time a month ago. It is the perfect replacement of a workout on an off day, detox after a late night or relaxation after a long day at work. I highly recommend it to everyone.
